[edit] How to run Fedora Core 5 on the Playstation 3

Estimated Time: This procedure takes hours.

Results: Once it is finished, Fedora Linux will be running on your PS3 in text mode. You Can type the command "startx" without the qoutes for the GUI(Graphical User Interface)

[edit] You will need

  • a high speed Internet connection (recommended)
  • a USB smart drive or other removable drive
  • a DVD recorder
  • recordable DVDs (required)
  • recordable CDs

[edit] Download step

Download all of these required files:

Note: you must use a DVD. CD installation won't work.

[edit] Prepare for Fedora installation

  • Plug the USB drive into your PC.
  • Create a directory called "PS3" in the drive's root directory.
  • In the PS3 directory, make an "otheros" directory.
  • Move otheros.self to the otheros directory.
  • Use a software like ISOBuster or WinRAR to open the Addon CD ISO you downloaded.
  • Go to the kboot folder inside the ISO file.
  • Extract the "otheros.bld" file to the otheros folder on your USB storage drive.
  • Unplug the USB drive. Plug it into your PS3.
  • Format your PS3's hard drive.
  • Partition it in half:
    • one Linux partition
    • one PS3 game OS partition
  • If it's a 20GB disk, make each partition 10GB.
  • On the PS3, choose Settings -> System Settings -> Install Other OS.
  • Click "OK" to install the kboot image.
  • Choose Settings -> System Settings -> Default System and select "Other OS".

Now, when you restart your PS3, you will see the Other OS Installer message. If you want to go back to the Game OS, hold the Power button for at least 5 seconds when starting the PS3. Note: This will also restore the PS3 to its default factory resolution.

  • Insert your Fedora Core 5 DVD and restart your PS3.
  • You should see the Fedora Core 5 installer kboot prompt.
  • The installer will recognize one hard drive - sda Linux.
  • Type "install-fc sda" at the kboot prompt.

You will see a message:

Please insert Fedore Core install DVD. Is it OK? (y/n):

Press Y to prepare your PS3 for Linux.

[edit] Install Linux

Now you'll be able to choose either:

  • Fedora Core minimum install, or
  • Fedore Core full install

We recommend a full install so that you will have the widest selection of software. Now the Fedora Core installation will start. For help with the installation, see the Fedora documentation available elsewhere on the web.

Note: When you install Fedora Core 5, the Linux partition you made will be formatted. If there was any data on that partition, it will be lost.

The installer will start installing Fedora on your PS3. After a while, you'll see:

"Please insert a Addon Packages CD. Is it OK? (y/n)"

Insert the Addon Disc you burned and press y.

Finally, you will see:

"Install done. Type reboot to start Linux or type halt to power off"

[edit] Configure and run Linux

If you wish, go through the Setup Agent. This is unnecessary though.

  • Login to Fedora
  • When you see the "localhost login:" prompt, type in "root" as your login name. This can be changed later.
  • Enter your UNIX password we told you to remember earlier.

You will see a prompt: [root@localhost ~]#

Linux is now running!

Use the "ps3videomode" utility to change your screen resolution.
